{"id":42679,"date":"2023-04-13T08:00:45","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T12:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/floridabaptist.wpengine.com\/?p=42679"},"modified":"2025-11-04T16:15:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T21:15:55","slug":"former-basque-missionaries-now-planting-basque-church-in-idaho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/former-basque-missionaries-now-planting-basque-church-in-idaho\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Basque missionaries now planting Basque church in Idaho"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BOISE, IDAHO\u2013Matthew McDonald was working as a pastor in Live Oak when he learned about Southern Baptist church planters in Boise, Idaho, who were looking to start a new church to minister to a large community of Basque residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having previously served with his wife Bethany for four years as <a href=\"http:\/\/imb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">International Mission Board<\/a> missionaries in the Basque region of Spain, the couple said they could see the providential hand of God at work as they considered uprooting their lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\">Florida<\/a> to move to Idaho and minister to Basque residents. With numbers beyond 16,000, this area in Idaho has the largest population of Basque residents outside of Spain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no such thing as coincidence in the kingdom of God,\u201d Matthew said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, he was a bit hesitant at first, perhaps stubborn, wanting to make sure this was what God wanted them to do. Church planters in Idaho suggested they pray about it and seek wise and godly counsel before giving them a final answer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that\u2019s what they did. But the more they prayed about it and the more they talked to trusted advisors, friends, mentors and fellow pastors, the more they realized this was God\u2019s calling. All the pieces began to fall into place, and quickly, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090325-copy.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-42489 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090325-copy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090325-copy.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090325-copy-500x377.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090325-copy-768x578.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a>They applied to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.namb.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">North American Mission Board<\/a> for assessment, a rigorous process that can sometimes take 15 to 18 months. They were approved in just six months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then they set out to raise money for this mission, an ambitious endeavor as the Boise area is an expensive place to live. They set their budget and began talking to churches about what God was doing and inviting people to contribute. Matthew figured it would take about 18 months. In just four short months, they were at the 95% mark!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every step of the way, they saw God\u2019s provision. \u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable how quickly God was able to put this together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230219_215846-copy-1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-42490 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230219_215846-copy-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" \/><\/a>Making connections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The couple and their children moved to Boise in April 2022 and have been there about a year now. It has not been an easy process, nor a fast one, but then they were not really expecting it to be. Church planters in Idaho had warned them that this was difficult work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Basque people, who came to America about 150 years ago during the gold rush days and ended up staying in Idaho as sheep farmers, are .02% evangelical. Most are culturally Roman Catholic, but they are not a very religious people, Matthew said. Approximately 90% of residents in the area are unchurched, and some 60% have a Mormon contextual base.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey hold tight to their culture and are really a tight-knit community,\u201d Matthew said. \u201cThey look like us, talk like us and dress like us. But they are not us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The McDonalds have started a home Bible study, which includes two 18-year-old men, one of them from the Basque community. They would like to grow this Bible study and grow disciples who will make more disciples.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make more connections and get to know more people in the community, they also serve in a variety of ways. The McDonalds volunteer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/basquemuseum.eus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Basque Museum and Cultural Center.<\/a> They take Basque language classes on Monday evenings with other Basque residents who speak English but want to learn their native language. They volunteer at a local elementary school, and they\u2019ve begun doing foster care because there is such a massive need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090719-copy.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42488 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090719-copy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090719-copy.jpeg 753w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_20230327_090719-copy-377x500.jpeg 377w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/a>They host \u201cPintxos with a Purpose\u201d at a local church once a month, serving Basque appetizers called pintxos, giving out recipes and interacting with people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also canvass neighborhoods doing survey work. In doing so they introduce themselves as a new church and get to meet new people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe tell them Jesus has called us to love our community. So, we ask them how can we better serve and connect with our community,\u201d Matthew said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of the church is Etxea, pronounced a-chaya &#8211; a Basque word that means \u201chouse of my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe thought this was the best name for our church because our desire is for them to come to the house of their Father,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way Matthew likes to share Christ with others is through what he calls Caf\u00e9 Evangelism. That\u2019s where he sets up shop in a local coffee shop with his laptop and a sign inviting people to share their story.<\/p>\n<div class=\"uk-card uk-card-default uk-card-body uk-margin\" style=\"border-left: 3px solid #f97316;\">\n<blockquote class=\"uk-text-large uk-margin-bottom\">\n<p>&#8220;\u2018We want to share Jesus in everything we do.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"uk-text-meta\">\n                <strong>Matthew McDonald<\/strong><br \/>\n                Florida Baptist pastor now planting Basque church in Idaho\n            <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n\u201cAs people share their story, we have an opportunity to bridge their story to the story of Jesus,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to share Jesus in everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When sharing the gospel with others, Matthew likes to share what he considers to be the three most powerful words in evangelism \u2013 \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen someone asks a question, saying \u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019 will disarm them. When we say \u2018We don\u2019t know,\u2019 we\u2019re acknowledging that we\u2019re human beings. It also leaves a hook for follow-up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in Live Oak, Matthew worked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sbalive.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Suwannee Baptist Association<\/a> to recruit students for NAMB\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gensend.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GenSend<\/a> ministry, and he\u2019s still doing the same in Boise, hoping to get more students to assist in the work they are doing. The ministry offers immersive, hands-on training to support students from middle school through post-grad life in their efforts to transform lives and leave a lasting impact. It\u2019s designed to give students the ministry mindset needed to become lifelong missionaries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The McDonalds have a goal of turning their home Bible study into a worship service by the end of 2023, but Matthew admits it takes time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to start a church. We\u2019re building relationships, and God is going to use them,\u201d he said. \u201cIt takes time \u2013 we expected that coming here, and it\u2019s proven to be true. However we plan and however it goes, we just want God to be glorified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthew quotes Vance Pitman, author and president of North American Mission Board&#8217;s Send Network, when he discusses their work as church planters to Basque residents in Boise.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur goal should be to use our passions and skills and ability where we live, work and play for advancing and glorifying God\u2019s kingdom,\u201d he said in quoting Pitman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s exactly what we need to be doing. I\u2019m not in hurry to start public worship services.
