{"id":44571,"date":"2023-08-15T08:00:14","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T12:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/floridabaptist.wpengine.com\/?p=44571"},"modified":"2025-11-04T16:17:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T21:17:23","slug":"more-than-50-florida-baptists-receive-academic-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/more-than-50-florida-baptists-receive-academic-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 50 Florida Baptists receive academic scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 50 Florida Baptists have received $1,000 scholarships for the 2023-24 academic year through a cooperative effort between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/cooperating-ministries\/financial-services\/\">Florida Baptist Financial Services<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/\">Florida Baptist Convention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Scholarship.pdf\">Florida Baptist Pastor\u2019s Theological Education Scholarship<\/a> was established in April 2022 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/state-board-celebrates-movement-of-god-throughout-florida\/\">Florida Baptist State Board of Missions meeting<\/a>, and this year\u2019s recipients are the second group to be awarded the scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited to partner in providing resources for theological education to Florida Baptists. The calling out of the called is critical for the advance of the gospel. It is a blessing to share in the equipping of the called for ministry. The generosity of Florida Baptists provides tangible encouragement to those preparing for ministry,\u201d said Tommy Green, Florida Baptists\u2019 executive director-treasurer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"uk-card uk-card-default uk-card-body uk-margin\" style=\"border-left: 3px solid #f97316;\">\n<blockquote class=\"uk-text-large uk-margin-bottom\">\n<p>&#8220;It is a blessing to share in the equipping of the called for ministry. The generosity of Florida Baptists provides tangible encouragement to those preparing for ministry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"uk-text-meta\">\n                <strong>Tommy Green<\/strong><br \/>\n                Executive director-treasurer, Florida Baptist Convention\n            <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rick Wheeler, president\/CEO of Florida Baptist Financial Services, added, \u201cThrough the generosity of our board members, we were once again able to offer these scholarships from the Florida1Fund.\u00a0While life and ministry can be difficult at times, we want to make it as easy as possible for Florida Baptist pastors and their immediate family members to be equipped as they fulfill God\u2019s call to serve the church. We were delighted to receive so many words of thanks and gratitude from the scholarship recipients, and we are honored to serve them in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among this year\u2019s 50-plus recipients is Aaron Chan, assistant pastor at <a href=\"https:\/\/rivercitybaptist.church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">River City Baptist Church<\/a> in Jacksonville and church planter at the <a href=\"https:\/\/rivercitybaptist.church\/mayport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hope Church of Mayport<\/a> in Jacksonville.<a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/AaronChan-e1691686639131.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44574 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/AaronChan-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a church planter, personal finances are often tight and unpredictable. As a church planter who is also a fulltime\u00a0seminary student, paying for a theological education is just another addition to the stress that I face daily. I am so thankful for the Florida Baptist Pastor\u2019s Theological Education Scholarship. The generosity of so many through this scholarship truly makes a difference to me and my family, and it allows me to care for my family and my church in an even greater way,\u201d Chan said.<\/p>\n<p>Chan has two more semesters before earning a master of divinity degree at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sebts.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary<\/a> in Wake Forest, North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Seana Reavis, wife of Josh Reavis, associate pastor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njbc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">North JAX Baptist Church<\/a>, is a second-year recipient of the scholarship. She is studying to attain a master of theological studies degree at <a href=\"https:\/\/swbts.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary<\/a> in Fort Worth, Texas.<a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SeanaReavis.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44575 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SeanaReavis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SeanaReavis.jpg 960w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SeanaReavis-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SeanaReavis-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/SeanaReavis-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been serving in ministry alongside my pastor husband for nearly 18 years and have long prayed about the opportunity to receive seminary training. As a mother of three growing children, receiving this scholarship means that I won\u2019t have to defer taking seminary classes as it removes some of the financial barrier that parents often have for further education,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy prayer is that this degree program will strengthen and further equip me to effectively teach and serve at the church where my husband is a pastor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garrett Johnson, worship pastor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandarinbaptist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mandarin Baptist Church<\/a> in Jacksonville, said he \u201cbegan sensing God expanding my calling to other areas of ministry. God has been using me and my family to meet the needs of our faith family in ways I most certainly wasn\u2019t anticipating early on in ministry!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, Alejandra, felt that \u201cpursuing a seminary degree was something God was leading me to, but yet again, things didn\u2019t quite make sense or add up, especially financially. But having seen God come through in the past made us believe He will provide again. So, we jumped in!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, as due dates for tuition payments drew closer, the couple began to feel financial pressure \u201cthat we might not be able to make certain ends meet, or that it might have just been an unwise time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/GarrettJohnson.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44576 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/GarrettJohnson-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/GarrettJohnson-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/GarrettJohnson-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/GarrettJohnson-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/GarrettJohnson.jpg 1495w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a>Johnson learned about the scholarship opportunity and quickly submitted his application. \u201cAs He always does, the Lord shows up with what we were<\/p>\n<div class=\"uk-card uk-card-default uk-card-body uk-margin\" style=\"border-left: 3px solid #f97316;\">\n<blockquote class=\"uk-text-large uk-margin-bottom\">\n<p>&#8220;As He always does, the Lord shows up with what we were needing! He is a faithful God and will always provide for what He calls us to!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"uk-text-meta\">\n                <strong>Garrett Johnson<\/strong><br \/>\n                Worship pastor, Mandarin Baptist Church, Jacksonville\n            <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>needing!
