Taylor, 93, recently was busy looking for his old overalls to wear to a special event.<\/p>\n<p>He plans to attend the 117<sup>th<\/sup> homecoming celebration of Franklin Street Baptist Church in Jacksonville May 18, and attendees have been invited to wear old-fashioned clothes to the 10:45 a.m. service. The worship service will feature traditional preaching and singing and will be followed with a free lunch with plenty of fellowship and, of course, homemade desserts.<\/p>\n<p>On May 17, 1908, 10 people met and organized Twenty-First Street Baptist Church on the corner of 21<sup>st<\/sup> and Fisher Streets in the northeast Springfield neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>About five months later, the church moved to a building on the corner of 16<sup>th<\/sup> and Franklin Streets and became Franklin Street Baptist Church. In 1939, construction began on the current sanctuary on that same corner. The church held its sanctuary dedication in 1941 and still holds a steady presence in the heart of Jacksonville.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018An oasis and a lighthouse\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At age 10, Taylor was baptized in the new sanctuary in 1942, joined the church and began leading the congregational singing as a teenager.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylani-and-Bobbie-Gore_franklinst_28247-copy.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49861\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylani-and-Bobbie-Gore_franklinst_28247-copy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylani-and-Bobbie-Gore_franklinst_28247-copy.jpeg 1280w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylani-and-Bobbie-Gore_franklinst_28247-copy-500x375.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylani-and-Bobbie-Gore_franklinst_28247-copy-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/kaylani-and-Bobbie-Gore_franklinst_28247-copy-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a> Bobbie Gore, pastor\u2019s wife at Franklin Street Baptist Church, shows some love to little Kaylani Hill. The church looks for opportunities to share God\u2019s love with children in the inner-city neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Taylor went on to serve as a minister of music in a few Baptist churches before returning to retire at Franklin Street, where \u201cThey still sing out of the hymn books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He admits it\u2019s hard to see the state of his old neighborhood. His former home was torn down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a vacant lot now. It breaks my heart to see so many homes boarded up, and there are several homes right next to Franklin Street that are boarded up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor is thankful the church is still going strong. He gives a lot of credit to the leadership of Pastor Terry Gore, and his wife, Bobbie.<\/p>\n<p>In 1988, Gore returned to Franklin Street after serving as the church\u2019s youth director in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>While Gore served 18 years at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sjbcjax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">San Jose Baptist Church<\/a> in Jacksonville as youth leader and associate pastor, people from Franklin Street often asked him if he would consider coming back. Judge Soud says Franklin Street Baptist Church is \u201cnot a large church, but the members are godly, faithful people who are sweeter than I can say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a large church, but the members are godly, faithful people who are sweeter than I can say,\u201d said Soud, a childhood friend of the pastor.<\/p>\n<p>Even with challenges that inner-city churches can experience, Soud, who still serves as a senior judge in Florida, said, \u201cThis church is welcomed in the neighborhood,\u201d and church leaders look for ways to meet community needs.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Davis, senior adult director and deacon chairman, said the church\u2019s Heart to Heart monthly senior ministry provides neighborhood residents with a fellowship opportunity. On a recent Monday night, more than 80 people attended the dinner and enjoyed gospel music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to offer hope and a chance for salvation for folks who are looking and seeking and trying to find their way,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>The church also reaches children who live in the inner-city neighborhood. For them, the church becomes a refuge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLittle children come at all hours of the day and night,\u201d Gore said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey knock on the door, and Bobbie meets them and brings them in, and some of them are hungry so we feed them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey rely on us. They come and often show us their report cards,\u201d Bobbie Gore said.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the children come by themselves without their parents on Sundays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always tell them, \u2018I know you could be anywhere else, but you came to church today,\u2019\u201d the pastor\u2019s wife said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ministry here is greatly for these neighborhood children,\u201d she said. \u201cWe just want to be a little small part of their lives when God lets us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cindy Rhoads, Sunday School director, agrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe plant the seeds, and we may not get to see (the children) all the time, but even if they come at least once, maybe it will grow,\u201d Rhoads said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49864\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flbaptist.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Al-Safferjpg-1536x1152.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a> Ninety-year-old Al Saffer of Crossroads Baptist Church in Jacksonville is served at the Heart to Heart dinner at Franklin Street Baptist Church. \u201cI love everything here\u2013the pastor, his wife, the camaraderie, the people and the testimony of the church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>About 15 children attend Sunday School each week. The church usually has about 80 in overall attendance on Sundays for worship with about 45 in Sunday School, she said. On Easter Sunday, 149 people attended.<\/p>\n<p>Rhoads, a second-generation member, and her husband, David, make the almost hour-long drive in from Middleburg each Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can feel the Holy Spirit when you walk in, and you feel the love. I think that\u2019s what people need, and that\u2019s why they keep coming back,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Member Billie Fouty agrees. After her husband, Mike, former deacon chairman, died in February 2023, she said the church supported her as she grieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerry and Bobbie are always there when you need them. They always come; no matter what time it is, you can call on them,\u201d she said, adding that the pastor is a \u201cgood preacher and a good shepherd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate pastor Jason Dennis, a third-generation member, is excited about the church adding more activities this summer for members and community residents. The church will start back with its Wednesday night services and will begin a movie night next month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the church grows, it gives us more opportunities to share Christ with people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"uk-card uk-card-default uk-card-body uk-margin\" style=\"border-left: 3px solid #f97316;\">\n<blockquote class=\"uk-text-large uk-margin-bottom\"><p>&#8220;We both feel like this is exactly where God wants us to be.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"uk-text-meta\"><strong>Bobbie Gore<\/strong><br \/>\npastor\u2019s wife, Franklin Street Baptist Church, Jacksonville<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt will be exciting to see what God\u2019s going to do through these additional activities as we open the doors up more and bring people in,\u201d Dennis said.<\/p>\n<p>The Gores, who have been married 55 years, agree that their 37 years at the church have flown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s gone by so fast that it\u2019s hard to think we\u2019ve been here this long, but we both feel like this is exactly where God wants us to be,\u201d Bobbie Gore said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>J.T.
